Families

Even in the comfort of your home you could be exposed to multiple dangerous chemical pollutants and not even know it.

Families can be exposed to sources of Persistent Organic Pollutants and not even know it. Families are groups of interconnected individuals — This means when your little one returns home from school with a runny nose, suddenly everyone at home is sneezing and coughing in no time. Families need to work together to protect their health and wellness from Persistent Organic Pollutants just as they would with the common cold.

POPs and Families

Persistent Organic Pollutants pose a real threat to the health of your children and spouse, especially during pregnancy. While you can’t control everything that they do, you can help minimise the serious dangers that these pollutants bring. As a member of this group, it is your responsibility to alert those who are unaware of the dangers that these chemicals cause and help bring about positive change before it’s too late.

How Families are being affected by POPs

Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) are toxic chemicals that are harmful to human health and the environment. Adverse reproductive, developmental, behavioral, neurological, endocrine, and immunological health effects have all been linked to POPs. Because of the many products that families interact with on a day-to-day basis, they can be exposed to a variety of dangerous chemicals in the form of fine particles, fumes, contaminated liquids or foods and more.

Danger lurks where you least expect it

Families, protect yourself!

Households are affected by many of the sub-groups of Persistent Organic Pollutants (see UPOPs, PBDEs, PFOS, PCBs, Pesticides). These pollutants can potentially be found in many household consumer products such as toys, foods, appliances, cars, furniture, electronics and backyards. Follow these simple tips to protect yourself from POPs:
  • Use moist cloths and a vacuum with a HEPA filter to reduce the circulation of PBDEs and other contaminants, which may be present in dust particles and on surfaces.
  • Cook meats in a way that allows the fat to drain off to reduce the ingestion of lipophilic (fat-loving) chemicals such as PBDEs
  • Avoid using fast food wrappers, grease-proof and stain-resistant fast-food wrappers which may contain PFOS.
  • Avoid improper preparation or storage of foods in contaminated articles. Non-stick PFOS cookware also poses a health risk.
  • Avoid burning household waste. If burning green waste, do not mix, with other materials (plastics, electronics, appliances, metals, glass).
