Children

You protect your children from all of life’s challenges and dangers. Why should the ones we don’t see be any different?

Young developing children are a product of their environment. And when their surroundings contain dangerous hazards such as Persistent Organic Pollutants(POPs), it’s important to educate and protect them from ever falling into harm’s way.

POPs and Children

Exposure to Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) at high levels or over long periods may cause developmental, behavioural, neurological, endocrine, and immunological health effects in children. Children are also particularly susceptible to some of these health implications due to their different stages in development. Please take every step to be aware of the dangers that can arise from your children’s exposure to POPs. Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) can be found in food, water, and consumer goods such as cleaning products, furniture and paint, which are found in nearly all households. If you are not fully aware of the dangers that can arise from POPs exposure, it means that children can be at risk whenever they eat, play, or sleep.

How Children are being affected by POPs

As the most vulnerable groups among us, parents and guardians have a responsibility to protect their children’s happiness and well-being. This means eliminating chances of contact with toxic chemicals that can be found in many household items. Children are less aware of health risks, and even a simple act such as putting their hands in their mouths, or playing in a dirty area outside can potentially expose them to chemical contamination. Exposure can be through consumer goods such as furniture, household pesticides, and even clothing (such as sleepwear). All caretakers must be vigilant and put measures in place to ensure child safety. Our actions today can determine the quality of life our children can have tomorrow. Make the effort to eliminate the risk of dangerous pollutants from their lives for good!

Danger lurks where you least expect it

Children, protect yourself!

For children, the threat of POPs can begin from conception. Mothers who have concentrated traces of POPs in their system can pass it onto their babies through the placenta and breast milk. As a vulnerable group, if children are affected by POPs it can lead to developmental setbacks, illness, and disabilities that can have a lifelong impact. Follow these simple tips to protect yourself from POPs:
  • Cook meats in a way that allows the fat to drain off to reduce the ingestion of lipophilic (fat-loving) chemicals such as PBDEs
  • Avoid the burning of copper wires and direct inhalation of emissions. Children should not play in areas where copper wire burning is practiced.
  • Fast food wrappers, grease-proof and stain-resistant fast-food wrappers used in the food and beverage industry may contain PFOS.
  • Eating the same type of potentially contaminated food (treated continuously with the same pesticide) can increase susceptibility to associated health implications.
  • Choose consumer goods that are less likely to contain brominated flame retardants.

Children, Reduce your exposure today!

Take a look at some of the persistent organic pollutants (POPs) that can affect your health and well-being.

By reducing your exposure to these pollutants, you are safeguarding yourself, taking an active role in the health of your loved ones and playing a greater role in the community at large by stopping these hazards before they can hurt others.
